Oakajee Port Development

Requirements

We have had a long history of involvement since the mid-1990’s when the project was initially proposed.

We were asked to provide a technical review of the breakwater and dredging aspects of the project and subsequently recommended a number of design improvements to lower the cost and improve technical robustness of the project.

Oakajee Port and Rail were subsequently nominated as the successful proponent by the Western Australian State Government in 2008.

We were appointed as the marine port consultant and our role in the port design included:

• the development of a causeway and breakwater with a total length of 2.5 km
• dredging of approximately 2.5 Mm³ of coastal limestone
• development of both offshore and onshore land reclamation areas.

We assisted OPR with all aspects of the port marine development from concept design through to the completion of a detailed Bankable Feasibility Study which included detailed design of the all aspects of the port.

Solutions

• Overall management of all marine studies and investigations for the project, including all wave monitoring, design wave studies, onshore armour quarry and offshore geotechnical investigations
• Port planning and layout, including managing design vessel simulation studies
• Production of all technical documentation for the construction tender packages
• Breakwater design studies, including overseeing physical model testing (both 2D and 3D) and development of detailed design documentation
• Assess dredging requirements and material dredgeability as well as all land reclamation works and development of all design documentation
• Technical input and advice.
