Marco Casassa Mont is advancing cyber security thought leadership to help BMT and our customers prepare for the next generation of IT and Operational Technology (OT)

Marco Casassa Mont is a Principal Cyber Security Consultant, Technology Functional Lead and BMT Fellow (Cyber), working within our Defence and Security business. A UKCSC Chartered Cyber Security Professional, Marco brings over 25 years of experience across cyber security, R&D, consulting and leadership, with a strong focus on delivering impactful outcomes for government and defence customers.

Cyber security expertise

Marco’s technical discipline lies in cyber security architecture, threat detection, cyber analytics and risk management. Since joining BMT, he has provided trusted advisory across 15+ medium and large-scale projects, supporting areas such as cloud security, SIEM, automation and advanced analytics.

His work includes defining cyber strategies, roadmaps and solution architectures, as well as supporting digital transformation initiatives across secure and complex environments - helping organisations make informed, risk-based decisions.

Innovation and technical leadership

Marco plays a leading role in our cyber research and innovation activities, focusing on applied solutions that address real-world challenges.

His recent work centres on:

  • Operational Technology (OT) and cyber-physical systems security
  • AI and machine learning for threat detection
  • Cyber analytics and threat intelligence
  • Security for maritime and autonomous systems

He has contributed to multiple multi-million-pound DSTL R&D programmes, shaping cyber approaches for defence, including cyber-physical planning, vulnerability analytics and risk management.

Bridging business and technology

A key strength of Marco’s work is bridging the gap between business needs and technical cyber solutions - ensuring security capabilities are practical, scalable and aligned with operational requirements.

He works closely with senior stakeholders and engineering teams to translate complex cyber risks into clear, actionable strategies, embedding secure-by-design principles from early concept through to implementation.

Research focus: future Operational Technology – cyber security

Marco’s Fellowship research focuses on the future of Operational Technology (OT) cyber security and the impact of emerging technologies, including Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC), on maritime and defence systems.

His work explores:

  • IT/OT convergence
  • Emerging cyber threats and safety risks
  • AI-driven capabilities and edge/cloud integration
  • Strategies for resilience and system assurance

The goal is to develop clear, practical guidance that helps BMT and its customers prepare for next-generation cyber challenges.

Why cyber security matters to our customers

Cyber security is increasingly critical across all sectors we support - from national security to maritime operations, offshore wind and autonomous platforms. As systems become more connected and attackers adopt advanced technologies, organisations must ensure their systems are secure, resilient and able to operate safely in complex environments.

Marco’s work helps customers navigate this evolving landscape with confidence, supporting the design and delivery of systems that are secure by design and resilient in operation.

Collaboration and impact

Marco’s work is highly collaborative, bringing together expertise across cyber, data science and engineering. He also leads our university relationships in cyber security, supporting joint R&D initiatives and mentoring students and early-career professionals. Through his Fellowship, he contributes to thought leadership, supports business growth and strengthens our cyber capability.

Why this work matters

Marco’s research equips both BMT and its customers with the insight needed to anticipate emerging risks and opportunities in a rapidly evolving digital landscape - supporting better decision-making and more resilient systems.

"Future OT is full of opportunity - but only if we understand the risks and prepare now. My work is about giving BMT and our customers the insight to stay ahead of fast-moving cyber threats."

What inspires Marco

Marco is driven by a passion for innovation and a desire to understand how technology, security and business intersect. The digital transformation across IT and OT continues to shape his focus on future risks and opportunities.

For Marco, the Fellowship provides the space to explore these challenges, share knowledge and ensure that research translates into practical value for customers operating in complex and evolving threat environments.
