Long-term coastal solutions: a trusted partnership with the WA Department of Transport

For over two decades, we have been a trusted partner to the Western Australian Department of Transport, aiding in the maintenance and enhancement of their coastal facilities. Our primary focus has been to manage and sustain the numerous waterways, boat harbours and coastal areas along Western Australia's extensive coastline, ensuring robust coastal management.

Project overview  

The Western Australia's coastline stretches over 8,000 kilometres, home to more than 35 coastal facilities, including boat harbours, marinas, channels and jetties. These facilities are crucial for local communities, providing access points for both recreational and commercial activities. However, these harbours often face challenges with sediment buildup, which can obstruct navigation and pose safety risks. 

Scope of work  

Our role as the preferred consultant for the Western Australian Department of Transport involves a comprehensive range of services to ensure these facilities remain operational and safe. Since 2012, we have managed the maintenance dredging program across the state, focusing on the following areas: 

• Maintenance and monitoring: Regular dredging management to maintain navigation channels, ensuring safe passage for vessels. 

• Environmental management: Sediment sampling, development of environmental impact assessments and management plans, obtaining necessary environmental approvals, and implementation of environmental monitoring and management, including water quality testing. 

• Planning and consultation: Survey review, stakeholder consultations and detailed specifications and scopes of work for dredging contractors. 

• Project management: Overseeing 10-12 projects annually, including contract administration and site supervision.

Innovation is at the heart of our operations. In recent years, we have integrated drone technology into our monitoring processes to help us survey coastal lines and monitor beach nourishment projects effectively. This technological integration allows us to provide detailed models to our clients, showcasing the progress and impact of nourishment efforts, thus enhancing our coastal management strategies.
