Jordan Tyers is winner of IMarEST 'Lady Hamlyn Award'

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Tehnoloty (IMarEST) is a registered charity and the international professional body and learned society for all marine professionals.

One of the main professional bodies BMT partners with, the IMarEST is committed to supporting lifelong learning, rewarding both those starting out in their careers and those at the cutting edge of new developments in their profession.

Jordan commented:

"Since an early age I have been interested in engineering and excelled in subjects at school like maths, science, art, and product design. The apprenticeship route was always appealing to me: the chance to learn on the job and get academically qualified while being paid was always more appealing to me than the strenuous years of university and the debt which comes with it. This award not only brings recognition to myself and BMT’s apprenticeship programme, but also the re-assurance that an institute like the IMarEST supports my goals and aspirations. The award will also allow me the opportunity to attend events, training, and acquire resources I will need for my HND and degree. The award also pushes me to further improve and shows that going the extra mile is always worth it."

So, what next for Jordan?

"Being at BMT has given me many opportunities to meet great people, expand my knowledge and go to new places around the world. Since I joined, I have had many opportunities to work on fun projects and go onboard a variety of ships like the TIDE class, HMS QUORN, and recently HMS PROTECTOR. My short-term ambition is to finish my apprenticeship later this year and complete the final year of my HND. My long-term aspirations are to enhance my skills as a marine engineer at BMT and look to complete my bachelor’s degree in engineering. If I am successful with this, I hope to one day become chartered and continue working on exciting engineering projects."
