4 April 2025
At the start of 2025, my hard work and dedication were recognised and I received the news that I was accepted as a VRT appraiser, specialising in inland navigation by the VRT- Verenigd Register van Taxateurs affiliated with NIVRE (Nederlands Instituut van Register Experts). This recognition reinforces my commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable appraisals for the inland shipping industry.
My Journey to VRT Registration
After graduating as an Industrial Engineer in Electromechanics, I gained extensive experience as a technical superintendent for dredging and offshore vessels, and within these roles, I developed expertise in general maintenance, classification, major repairs, dockings, inspections and shipbuilding.
In early 2021, I joined BMT as a marine surveyor. This role broadened my knowledge of inland vessels as an independent inspector, gathering information and identifying hazards and risks, which allowed me to collaborate closely with skippers, shipowners, shipyards, and shipbrokers, providing me with first-hand experience in vessel operations and valuations.
With four years as an independent inspector, handling increasing numbers of valuation requests from insurers, shipowners, and banks, I was ready to pursue VRT certification in Inland navigation.
What is VRT and why does it matter?
The VRT Foundation (Verenigd Register van Taxateurs) is an affiliated register of NIVRE, but remains an independent foundation. VRT-registered appraisers specialise in various sectors, including inland shipping, and are recognised by key industry stakeholders such as insurers, banks, and financial institutions. The VRT Foundation – Verenigd Register van Taxateurs is involved in appraisals for insurance purposes, including damage appraisals. All registered appraisers maintain a high level of competence, expertise and integrity. This is regularly tested during workshops and seminars.
My VRT Foundation appraiser registration is specifically aimed at the inland shipping market.
How this benefits our customers
Beyond being a professional milestone, my VRT registration brings tangible benefits to the customers and partners I work with:

At 3am on a March morning, while many were still sleeping, our amazing colleagues in the Netherlands laced up their trainers and took on a 15km sunrise walk to raise money and awareness for ALS. This year’s walk carried even deeper meaning, as it was inspired by one of our own teammates recently diagnosed with the condition.
