Port Hedland Port is a large bulk export port located in the Pilbara region serving the iron ore rich Eastern Pilbara.
In order to increase channel depth and export capacity, Port Hedland Port Authority (PHPA) undertook dredging of high spots present along the 45 km channel.
The high spot dredging project utilised Jan de Nul’s Leonardo da Vinci, one of the largest self propelled cutter suction dredges in the world.
Material was cut and left in place on the seabed, for subsequent removal by a trailing suction hopper dredge at a later date.
PHPA engaged BMT to manage all aspects of the dredging works, from the preparation of drawings and contract documents through to 24 hour supervision onboard the dredge for the duration of the project.
We were engaged by the Bunbury Port Authority in 2004 and again in 2007 to manage maintenance dredging works undertaken in the harbour and channel areas of the Port.
We have been involved in a variety of tasks related to the expansion of facilities at Cape Lambert in order to increase the iron ore output capacity at the port.
Using AIS-based methodology, BMT mapped out marine traffic scenarios that have enabled clients to plan future dredging activity safety & efficiently.
With our expertise in port planning and close knowledge of Western Australian ports, we provided port expansion options, dredging and construction solutions, and cost estimates for construction and facility operations.
