Design and Engineering of a Modular Floating Platform on Singapore's Waterfront

A modular floating platform - currently the world's largest floating stage (2018) - was constructed and moored ti site in Marina Basin in Singapore. The multi-purpose structure has been the site for important cultural events since 2007, bringing vibrancy to Singapore's waterfront.

Known at The Float@Marina bay, the floating platform is a safe, flexible and efficient marine solution to land-based challenges such as land scarcity and construction disruption

Solutions 

We were commissioned by SML Shipyard Pte Ltd to support them in the competitive tender participation, design work of the Floating Platform, participate in design review with the client, as well as testing and acceptance support work.

This project was a fast-track project with design, construction and installation of the Floating Platform being completed in 13 months.

Subsequently we were appointed by SML Shipyard to;

• Design the pontoons capable of taking a 30T vehicle with 6T wheel patch load.
• Manage the model testing program to assess its behaviour in specified currents and waves.
• Design connecting system for the pontoons that they can be assembled to form the FP as well as re-configure into other shapes.
• Design three link ways for access from shore side that incorporated bolted deck panels and trusses to allow transportation from fabricator facilities to the site for the final assembly.
• Design six mooring piles for the FP that are removable to clear the water area for other uses when the FP is relocated to other areas. Mooring dolphins using fender rollers were designed to allow adjustments in two directions to take care of construction tolerances in mooring pile locations.
