Dr Tim Curtis recognised as a Fellow of the Systems & Complexity in Organisation

17 April 2024

It’s with pride that we announce Dr Tim Curtis has been recognised as a Fellow of the Systems & Complexity in Organisation (SCIO) professional body. This distinguished professional qualification highlights the significant recognition of Tim's expertise and dedication to supporting organisations with complex social & environmental challenges over a 30-year career, emphasising his crucial contributions to practice of systems thinking and complexity science in global management and leadership.

In order to achieve Fellow status, Tim demonstrated that he has developed one or more new systems methodologies or methods that others can use and can apply systems laws and principles directly to complex organisation problem situations.

He also demonstrated that he has used several systems thinking intervention approaches and has applied a range of options for how to plan, manage and execute an intervention into complex problem situations in a range of sectors.

In providing a portfolio of his work in this area, Tim drew on his early experiences of the Brent Spar oil and gas decommissioning project, and subsequent work in the sector, as well as teaching systems thinking in over 30 different undergraduate programmes from business to science & technology subjects, as well as coaching postgraduates in conducting their own systems thinking investigations. He also drew on his decade of work with UK police forces, developing toolkits for understanding the complexity of neighbourhood policing and developing learning resources for police officers and community members.

Tim Curtis shared his thoughts on this recognition,

"Frankly, I'm quite staggered, and delighted at this. I applied to the Systems & Complexity in Organisation professional body to be recognised as a Practitioner, but in recognition of some 30 years of engagement with systems thinking and complexity science meant that I was recognised with the highest qualification.  The golden thread of my very diverse career has been applying systems thinking and complexity science to understand and address some of the world's most challenging problems in many different contexts. Thanks to all who have supported and encouraged me!

The SCiO UK chair, Tony Korycki, added,

“It’s great that Tim came forward, open to the rigour of our evidence-based practitioner qualification approach, and willing to share his knowledge and experience, so it’s a pleasure to qualify him at the Fellow level as a systems thinking professional”. We welcome practitioners who would like to pursue recognition through certification, and anyone can find out more at www.systemspractice.org.

What is a ‘Systems and Complexity in Organisation’ Practitioner?

SCiO (Systems and Complexity in Organisation) is a community of systems & complexity science practitioners who understand that traditional approaches to running organisations are no longer capable of dealing with the complexity and turbulence faced by organisations today and are responsible for many of the problems we see today. SCiO develop systemic approaches to designing and running organisations offer radically new and better alternatives, regardless of whether those organisations are in industry, commerce, public service or the voluntary sector, or are associated with public institutions active in those social spheres.

SCiO operates a professional certification scheme for practitioners at all levels of experience that is tied into a competency framework, which can be used to demonstrate a level of expertise in the application of systems & complexity science to organisations, and plan future professional development.

The SCiO have developed a competency framework relevant to Systems Thinking practice, available for any practitioner to self-assess, that supports the UK’s England & Wales Masters’ level apprenticeship, and qualification in Systems Practice.
