BMT Advances Navy's Next-Generation Submarine Combat Capability

26 November 2024

BMT, a significant player in the Future Naval Design Partnering (FNDP) Framework, has successfully supported the Royal Navy in advancing its next-generation torpedo capability.
In July 2024, the latest version of the Spearfish torpedo was successfully tested during Sea Acceptance Testing (SAT) aboard a Vanguard-class submarine. This milestone highlights BMT’s ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Royal Navy, aimed at enhancing operational readiness and maritime defence capabilities.

BMT Leads Complex Integrated Trials

As part of the Weapon Thread Project on behalf of the MOD, BMT’s Trials & Validation (T&V) team led the planning and execution of the SAT for the combat system. This included delivering a critical system update along with the latest version of the Spearfish torpedo.
BMT’s deep expertise in torpedo operations, submarine combat system development, and decades of operational experience were central to ensuring that the Royal Navy’s submarines are equipped to meet the latest maritime threats.

Commodore Chris Goodsell, the Senior Responsible Owner for the programme and Deputy Director Submarines, said:

“I would like to thank teams from across Navy Command, the Submarine Delivery Agency, DE&S, and our industry partners who continue to commit time and effort to delivering this vital capability.”

A Collaborative Milestone in Submarine Defence

This success marks the first time in decades that a Royal Navy submarine has undertaken such a complex integrated trial, and BMT was at the forefront of delivering it. Years of planning, preparation, and operational expertise allowed BMT to lead and execute the entire evolution of the trials. BMT's role as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) provided vital operational context, ensuring that the Royal Navy’s fight capabilities are advanced and ready for future challenges.

Paul Burke CBE, Senior Business Development Manager - Submarines at BMT, commented:

“This is core to what we do at BMT. Leading the testing, trials and validation efforts for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet is grounded in decades of experience and expertise in combat systems development. The successful Sea Acceptance Testing (SAT) of the Spearfish torpedo represents a major collaborative effort across MOD, the Submarine Delivery Agency, and our industry partners. As part of the collaborative Future Naval Design Partnering (FNDP) framework, this achievement strengthens the foundation for continued advancements in the UK’s naval defence capabilities.”

Looking Ahead: Future Testing, Trials and Validation Work

This contract underlines BMT’s key role in the ongoing development of the Royal Navy’s combat capability. BMT’s T&V team will continue to support the next phases of the Weapon Thread Project, which include the installation, testing, and acceptance of updates across the fleet through both formal harbour and sea trials. Additionally, BMT is also delivering the System Test Unit 2, which provides command-level fight capability assurance through comprehensive end-to-end system testing.

Aligned to the Future Naval Design Partnering (FNDP) Framework

BMT’s involvement in the Weapon Thread Project is closely aligned with the UK MOD’s FNDP framework. This framework focuses on selective industry support for early-stage design, technology management, and through-life technical support for submarine programmes. BMT’s leadership and proven expertise in submarine testing, trials, system acceptance, and torpedo operations further strengthen its position as a collaborator within this framework, helping the Royal Navy maintain and evolve its world-class submarine fleet.

Through its contributions to the FNDP framework, BMT remains committed to delivering cutting-edge naval solutions in collaboration with the MOD and industry stakeholders, ensuring the Royal Navy is prepared to meet future maritime defence challenges.

With a long-standing history of technical excellence in submarine and undersea/subsea technology, BMT continues to lead in maritime defence innovation. At the forefront of submarine design and development, BMT leverages cutting-edge technologies to enhance undersea/subsea warfare capabilities. Its expertise in modular construction, integrated systems, and emerging technologies like uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) has positioned BMT as a key partner in future-proofing naval platforms. Through decades of evolutionary technical expertise and its role in major programmes, BMT drives advancements that ensure the Royal Navy remains a global leader in undersea/subsea operations. With continued collaboration with the MOD and industry partners, BMT is poised to support the Navy’s evolving submarine fleet and deliver world-class naval solutions for the future.
