Ports and Harbours are now having to incorporate formal net-zero strategies to support decarbonisation efforts. This is mainly via electrification and/or alternative fuels, with increasing uptake globally. There has slowly been an increase in ships using electric and alternative fuels, although limited infrastructure is reducing the uptake However, electrification is fundamental to these efforts and improving local air quality. The use of on-shore power supplies (OPS) minimises the requirements for engines to be in operation. Therefore, it is imperative that all stakeholders do more to improve the availability of OPS, which is backed up by current regulations. Join Tania Berry MSc MIET MIMarEST, our Electrical Capability Lead at Coastlink Conference, 29-30 April 2025 as she joins a panel of experts to discuss the guidance for Port electrification planning and integration, and the key considerations to be made during the process. #ports #decarbonisation #electrification

We’re incredibly proud to see Dr Shona Cunningham, our Principal Engineer at BMT, featured in the April issue of The Naval Architect by RINA - showcasing her pioneering work in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and hull analysis In this article, "A New Take on Hull Analysis", Shona explores how we’re rethinking traditional methodologies to unleash new levels of performance, accuracy and safety in hull design. Her novel, entrepreneurial CFD-led approach enables smarter, faster design optimisation - accelerating development cycles and redefining what's possible in hull performance evaluation. The piece also pays tribute to our British Ship Research Association (BSRA) heritage, spotlighting our long-standing leadership in naval research, ship design validation, and performance analysis. It aligns with our current global ranking as one of the top three CFD consultants, and is a fantastic showcase of the talent, curiosity, and leadership Shona brings to BMT - and to the wider marine industry. Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3FZrpQg With thanks to Martin Conway, Managing Editor at the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), for crafting and curating the feature so thoughtfully. #EngineeringExcellence #NavalArchitecture #Innovation

Our people are at the heart of everything we do. With decades of experience in naval architecture, marine engineering and structural and production engineering, our expert team continues to push the boundaries of engineering excellence. Their deep technical knowledge and commitment to innovation are what make projects like the Caimen® Japan (Kidou-Shutei) landing craft a reality. As part of this major programme, our team recently visited JAPAN MARINE UNITED CORPORATION (JMU) for a series of key meetings in the functional design phase. Over three intensive days, we worked side by side with JMU to cement critical design decisions, significantly reducing risk ahead of functional design delivery later this year. Upon completion, the project will transition to consultancy support through to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s landing craft delivery in 2027. Beyond the technical milestones, the trip reinforced our strong partnership with JMU and facilitated valuable discussions with ATLA, Japan’s defence procurement agency, about future collaborations. A huge thank you to our incredible BMT team and our partners at JMU, this project is a testament to the trust placed in BMT’s team of experts and proven capability to deliver cutting-edge naval solutions. At 3am on a March morning, while many were still sleeping, our incredible colleagues in the Netherlands laced up their trainers and set off on a 15km sunrise walk - all to raise awareness and funds for ALS. This year’s walk carried even deeper meaning, as it was inspired by one of our own teammates recently diagnosed with the condition. ALS is a progressive disease that affects the motor neurons - the nerves that control our muscles - gradually making everyday actions like walking, speaking and even breathing more difficult. Research and support are making a difference – and every little bit helps. Massive shoutout to our colleague, Chloe Wilkinson-Kamsteeg for pulling the whole thing together. Chloe commented "the final 5km were especially moving when our colleague and his family joined the group." Together, the team raised over €3,000 – an amazing effort all round. Big thanks as well to BMT’s Charity Committee for their support. The walk has already sparked ideas for more ways we can raise money for causes that matter to us. To everyone who walked, donated or supported from afar – thank you. This was a real moment of coming together for something bigger than ourselves. If you’d still like to contribute, here’s where you can do so: https://bit.ly/42m6hv9 Nice one, team: Agnes Reek, Arjan van Aalst, Chloe Wilkinson-Kamsteeg, Dennis de Bruin, Ilona Sakko, Ivo Bezuijen, Leo de Galan, Natasha Winterton, Panagiotis Kasionis, Peter Knol, Thomas Hendrikx, Sandra Rijke, Sharmila Doekhi #TeamBMT
