STEM

Encouraging young people to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects

STEM

Our team of dedicated employees are committed to supporting STEM initiatives and coordinating STEM activities around the world to inspire the next generation. By enabling young people to discover how core subjects apply to the real world to solve the complex problems of the future, STEM can inspire the next generation to broaden their horizons when considering future careers.

This space is dedicated to all things STEM. See below upcoming and past events that we have participated in plus a selection of activities designed for children of all ages to take part in. These are not only fun but can help spark a lifelong interest in a STEM subject area and potentially even start them on the path to a STEM career!

STEM Returners

We are proud to partner with STEM Returners, an initiative that facilitates the return of skilled professionals to the STEM industry after a career break. This collaboration aims to create inclusive opportunities and foster diversity within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

BMT’s Global People Director Gudrun Neumann, shared her enthusiasm for this transformative partnership:

STEM Returners
"At BMT, we believe in the power of diversity and inclusion to drive innovation and progress, as reflected in our workplace’s strategic commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I). Our collaboration with STEM Returners reflects our dedication to supporting skilled professionals as they reignite their careers and make a meaningful impact within the STEM industry. We are excited to welcome these returning talents to our teams and witness the transformative contributions they will bring via a structured and supportive route back into industry."

New Scientist Live 2024

We had a great time exhibiting at New Scientist Live. We chatted to lots of young people considering STEM careers and shared with them just a few of the many disciplines available in maritime engineering.

Find out more about the STEM areas you could be working in below in the 'STEM Spotlight: Our Team, Our Disciplines' area.

Past events

Encouraging and inspiring young people to discover STEM subjects.

STEM for Girlguiding

Imagine a day filled with hands-on experiments, interactive learning, and endless possibilities. Recently, our Bath-based team in the UK hosted an exciting STEM day for Girlguiding at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI).

Curious minds aged 4 to 15 explored six captivating interactive stands, delving into topics like buoyancy and code-breaking. We led the way with engaging experiences in these areas, alongside activities such as DNA extraction, filtration, binary bracelets, and more! Every Girlguiding member walked away with a certificate and a STEM badge – a tangible reminder of their achievements and the boundless opportunities awaiting them in STEM careers.

BRLSI STEM 2

Bristol Harbour Festival

Bristol Harbour Festival

We had had to assemble a boat entirely out of cardboard and compete in a 200m boat race in Bristol Harbourside.

Roman Bath Festival of Lights

Roman Bath Festival of Lights

We supported the Roman Baths in creating a magical evening of floating tealight boats upon the Great Bath.

Virtual Reality showcase

UKNEST Prince of Wales event

We were part of the alliance that played a role in the design and construction of two aircraft carriers – HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. We joined fellow UK Naval Engineering, Science & Technology members to celebrate the successful completion of the second aircraft carrier. The event featured a range of STEM activities. We had 20 engineers in attendance and our Virtual Reality capability was popular with visitors, including Jeremy Quin MP, Minister for Defence Procurement.

Engineered in Bath

BRSI Event

We took part in the 'Engineered in Bath' exhibition at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, UK which showcased hardware and software products from exciting and cutting-edge engineering companies in modern Bath.

We challenged young adults to make and design paper origami boats to be displayed in an art installation.

BMT Beatles Marine Team

STEM - Bristol Boat Race

We're delighted to report that the 'BMT Beatles Marine Team', who recently set sale in a cardboard boat at the Bristol Cardboard Boat Race, came first in the race!! Organised by My Future My Choice, this incredible event aims to raise awareness of Bristol waterways and prove that engineering can be FUN. With our strong STEM connections, we're proud to support this local initiative and inspire young minds.

Giant Cardboard Boat Race: Local businesses and organisations took on the challenge of designing and constructing their own boats using only cardboard, glue, paint, and yacht varnish. It's a test of creativity, skill, and determination.  The racecourse was approximately 250 meters long, challenging participants to navigate around a marker buoy and make it back to the pontoon, which is not as easy as it sounds!

Join us in celebrating the power of engineering, creativity, and community. Let's show the world that engineering is not just about nuts and bolts, but also about having a blast on the water.

Imagineering, Royal Bath and West Show

Imagineering, Royal Bath and West Show

In the Imagineering Marquee, we ran activities alongside the Royal Navy, Army, DSTL, IET and more. Many foam boats were made and tested as the event hosted approximately 20,000 children and their families over a busy Jubilee weekend.

Race for Life

three-rivers-stem

We visited Three Rivers Academy in Walton-on-Thames, UK to introduce Year 7 students to aerodynamics. We challenged them to make and race minature cars or boats that were NOT aerodynamic so they could understand 'what not to do' for the a competition they were taking part in called 'Race for Life', organised by the Learning Partnership.

LEGO League

Judging the LEGO Masters League- prev

The First LEGO League is a global science and technology challenge for teams of students aged nine to sixteen, seeing schools from across the South West compete against each other. Our Senior Engineers Andrew Shirley and Simon Newman judged teams on their ability to research a given topic, create a presentation and design, build and programme a LEGO robot to solve a series of missions. The concept for the year's competition was 'City Shaper' and was themed around architecture and the spaces in which we live.

SULSTEMIC 23

SULSTEMIC 2023

HMS Sultan, Gosport, UK

We recently took part in an exciting open day onboard HMS Sultan in support of the STEM event 'SULSTEMIC 23'.  In the region of 240 pupils from local schools in Gosport, Fareham and the Isle of Wight (aged 8 - 10) were introduced to STEM disciplines from a range of industry partners.  We showcased our naval architecture capabilities, inviting pupils to make and design origami boats.
